Learn water safety, in and around the water, for you and your loved ones
Make sure you start smart! Before you or a loved one get in the water, consider these factors:

Preparation
Make sure you have what you need to stay safe
Swim Lessons
If you or a loved one don't know how to swim, consider swim lessons!
Just because you know how to swim now, it doesn't mean that you've considered everything to help you remain safe. When you're thinking of getting in the water, make sure you ask yourself these questions first:
Is it safe to swim?
Is there supervision?
How deep is the water?
Now that you've learned how to assess whether it's safe to swim, you need to make sure that the way you swim is safe!
Never swim alone
Always have a buddy with you, no matter how safe the water is or how good of a swimmer you are
Use U.S. Coast Guard approved floatation devices
U.S. Coast Guard approved floatation devices are the best floatation devices that you or a loved one can use to keep yourselves safe! Check the label inside your lifejacket to see the verification
Now that you're as prepared as you can be before getting in the water, make sure that you're prepared in the event that something goes sideways! Here are some things that you can do to help ensure that you and your loved ones stay out of trouble, or get out of trouble safely:

Even in the presence of lifeguards, have a dedicated water watcher
Safety measures in place (fences, signage)
Recognition
Learn to recognize
Response
Learn how to respond in the event of an emergency by taking First Aid and CPR classes
CPR
Should you need to, be prepared to help by becoming certified to perform CPR. Doing so could save a life!
